Youth Football Camps Teach More Than Just Plays And Drills
August 6th, 2008I came across a very inspirational article from the Ventura Country Star about Jon Mack, the head coach of the Ventura College Football team, and his approach to teaching kids more than just youth football plays! He calls it the ABC’s of football.
Throughout his long coaching career, he has used a motto to inspire his athletes to work together in order to learn all of the football plays and drills needed to be the best possible players:
“Together, everyone achieves more.”
Coach Mack obviously knows how to inspire kids to perform at a high level, because over the last 11 years of his career, he has lead his team to 11 straight league titles! Now, he is using that same motto to motivate nearly 200 kids between the ages of 7 and 14 that attend the two sessions of youth football camps ran by the college!
The focus of these week long camp sessions is to develop a love for the game of football, while teaching the kids the fundamentals of the game, youth football plays, and instilling a competitive mindset inside of the young athletes.
He creates a sense of togetherness amongst the camp’s participants, just as he has done in with the players he has coached in the past. The kids really enjoy the camp, because they get to have fun with their friends, and at the same time, better prepare themselves for the next level of football!
To all of the parents, coaches, and anyone else involved in teaching youth football plays and drills to children, it would be a great idea to think about coach Mack’s motto! Football is a team sport, and no individual player can win games without the help of their team mates!
If you can instill a sense of togetherness amongst the whole team, they will start to look at the demanding drills that they go through in practice as both fun and competitive, instead of just going through the motions because you tell them to!
